Marfa
Mention Marfa and two things immediately spring to mind: the motion picture
“Giant” and the mysterious Marfa Lights.
Marfa will forever be the home of Jett Rink and Leslie Benedict, due to the
success of the 1955 movie “Giant” filmed on location here. Most of the crew
stayed at El Paisano Hotel, while Rock Hudson, James Dean and Elizabeth Taylor
stayed in private homes in town. The huge Reata ranch house was actually a
false front, erected a few miles outside of Maria.
A Marfa Lights Festival is held Labor Day weekend which includes a parade, and
arts and crafts fair, and a concert.
There is a Maria Lights historical plaque and viewing area about 9 miles east of
Marfa for watching the mystery lights. Look to the southwest to see the famous
lights.
For information, contact the Marfa Chamber of Commerce, P0. Box 635, Maria, TX
79843, or call
915-729-4942.
Free Maria Lights video daily, 9 AM - 6 PM at Apache Trading Post, U.S. Hwy. 90
West.
